Mental Health and Drugs Division is responsible for
mental health and drugs policy, planning, strategy
and programs that deliver prevention, early
intervention, treatment and support to Victorians
experiencing mental health or substance misuse
issues, and their carers or other family members.
The work of the division includes a range of
statutory responsibilities including regulation and
monitoring, the development of policy and quality
standards, workforce development, and the delivery
and monitoring of specialist mental health and
alcohol and other drug services. Programs are
delivered in partnership with health service
providers, non-government organisations, and other

Pursuing excellence in practice, teaching and
research
The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Monash
University offers an innovative, flexible range
of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate
levels, which encourage students to explore all
facets of nursing and midwifery practice.
Undergraduate courses include the extended degree
Bachelor of Nursing (Psychological Studies), and
double degrees including the Bachelor of
Nursing/Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic),
Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery (Gippsland)
and the degrees of, Bachelor of Nursing (Rural
Health Practice), Bachelor of Nursing and the
Bachelor of Midwifery.
Our Master of Nursing and Clinical Midwifery degrees
offer flexible study pathways with research or
specialty course work options. Specialist majors in
the Master of Nursing degree include areas such as
practice development, mental health, critical care,
emergency, medical surgical and palliative care.
Successful applicants are offered individual course
and career path planning and a variety of fee
options. Students in the Master of Nursing have exit

The Master of Nursing (Mental Health) has three
broad themes:
a. specialisation and advanced practice in mental
health nursing;
b. professionally broadening studies (for example, a
socio-political perspectives, and information
technology/literacy; and
c. research preparation (for students intending to
complete a 24 credit point research project in year
3.
The Master of Nursing (Mental Health) is suitable
for nurses wishing to provide mental health care in
a variety of clinical settings including those where
primary healthcare is provided. The care is
underpinned by the professional skills of
innovation, problem solving, evidence –based
practice and social awareness and justice.

The Nurses Board of Victoria is a self-funded
statutory authority incorporated under the Health
Professions
Registration Act 2005. Now in its 14th year of
operation, nurses have been regulated in Victoria
for more than 80 years.
As an organisation responsible to a Board, we are
all aware of our legislative commitments and
functions as well as our role within the greater
Victorian community, our largest stakeholder. Other
stakeholders include all registered nurses,
education providers, Directors of Nursing, unions,
the Department of Human Services and the Minister
for Health.
The Board regulates and promotes nurses in the
interests of the Victorian public and the nursing
profession as a whole. We are proactive in our
communications with the public and other bodies,
both in Australia and overseas, as we constantly
monitor the trends affecting the profession and
their delivery of healthcare. All our functions are
open and transparent, showing ethical, responsible
and accountable management of our role. We take a

Mackay Integrated Mental Health and ATOD’S Service is
part of the Mackay Health Service District which
comprises a wide range of acute, community and rural
services.
The service has over 120 staff across the various
centres in Mackay and the Whitsunday area and is
also professionally responsible for staff in the
more remote Hinterland region.
Inpatient, Case Management, Intake and Assessment,
Forensic, Child and Youth, Rehabilitation, ATOD’s,
Older Persons and Outreach are but some of the teams
that make up a busy, innovative Mental Health
Service.

Health and Community
Services Union
The Health and Community
Services Union (HACSU) is the only specialist union
in Australian that represents the unique
professional, industrial and service delivery
interests of Mental Health Nurses.
HACSU advocate for improvements
in Mental Health policy including a growth and
improvement in the resources available to Mental
Health services, improvements in undergraduate
curriculum and support for access to ongoing
professional development and support.
HACSU members enjoy support in
a range of circumstances including individual
support and protection on grievances, discipline,
and return to work after injury. Groups of members
also enjoy support and assistance in dealing with
workplace and service changes.
In 2007 HACSU were successful
in winning major gains for Mental Health Nurses
through our EBA negotiations. In addition to
significant pay increases, we managed to secure
additional positions, improved career paths,
childcare expenses for some members, increases in
paid maternity and adoption leave as well as a range
of other entitlements.
